It would be natural for Zack to become impatient with God if he focused on current circumstances. But whether what you’re doing was something thrust on you (like in Zack’s life) or a project you chose to organize, faith is a choice—a choice to trust not your circumstances, yourself, or your plans but God.

When we acknowledge our dependence on God as we do hard things, we’re telling Him and the people around us that it’s not about us. Persevering in hardship, dreaming big, and staying faithful to God no matter the cost is one way to show Christ to others.

After all, people hanging up on you, venues falling through, microphones not working, friends disagreeing, medical setbacks, fatigue, donors backing out, and even facing your own weaknesses are not obstacles to doing hard things—they are hard things.

The most remarkable line in Zack’s letter is “Crohn’s has actually been a blessing to me.” Those are words born out of great struggle, questions, and waiting. They speak to the “results” God is giving Zack: compassion, faith, and the ability to encourage others. Those results have come at a cost, but they are worth it.

Whether your weariness feels like a blessing now or not, God is aware of it. He is able to use it to bring about growth that reaches far beyond any human plans. Following God, even though things don’t necessarily go as you’d hoped, is why you are doing hard things in the first place.
